7 Biggest Problems that Occur in Household Plumbing

7 Biggest Problems that Occur in Household Plumbing August 23, 2023 admin Plumbing problems can feel like a nightmare, especially if you start running into problem after problem. It’s important to keep up with the maintenance of your plumbing systems as well as learn a bit about why these problems are occurring. There are seven biggest problems that occur in household plumbing, and those include the pesky dripping faucet, low water pressure, slow draining, running toilets, leaky pipes, sump pump failures, and water heater problems. Let’s get into these issues so you know what to do if you experience them. Dripping Faucets A dripping faucet not only drives you crazy, but it’s a waste of water and money. You may think the slow drips are not a huge deal, but it does start to accumulate the amount of water being used and the amount you’ll see on your water bill. So, what are the usual causes for a dripping faucet? The most common reason we see for dripping faucets are due to a worn-out washer inside the faucet. How did the washer get so worn-out? A build-up of chlorine is the usual cause for this. Another reason could be loose parts, which can easily be fixed by a little righty-tighty. If your faucet is leaking by the base or the handles, chances are you have a bad o-ring. The o-ring is a small disk that is attached to the stem screw that holds the handle and faucet in place. If you see leaking anywhere else, this is probably the reason why. Low Water Pressure If you’re experiencing low water pressure it’s probably due to a shut or blocked water meter valve, mineral buildup clogs in pipes, corroded pipes, or even a crack in the main city supply pipe to your home. The first thing you should do is call an experienced, professional plumber. They’ll be able to diagnose the issue faster than you trying to troubleshoot everything. However, if you want to find out the base of the problem, here’s some things you can do. The first place you should start is by looking at your home’s main shutoff valve. It’s normally located on the exterior of your home or in a utility room of some sort. All you need to do is ensure that the valves are in an open position. If you see any kind of breakage, call a plumber! When it comes to mineral deposits made up of limestone, rust, and other sediments, you’ll want to remove the faucet or shower head to clean out the sediment that has collected inside plumbing fixtures. You’ll know if this is the issue if the water pressure is only low in a specific area. So, if your sinks are working fine but your shower water pressure is low, you know this is the probable issue. If you don’t know how or want to try to figure this one out on your own, just call a plumber. We can help. Slow Drainage System There’s nothing worse than a slow drain. Have you ever taken a shower and found yourself standing in a puddle of water while you’re trying to wash your hair? Not only does it take the enjoyment out of your shower, but it will also cause worry that something is wrong with plumbing system. The usual reason for this is a clog. Whether your shower is draining slow or your kitchen sink, it’s normally due to soap clogs, fat/grease clogs, or even hair and rust build-up. Drain-O and products alike are fine for a temporary fix, but it will not fix the issue completely. Also, these materials are bad for your plumbing system’s health overtime. Instead, call a plumber and they’ll be able to find the source of the clog and take care of the repair for you. Plus, you don’t want to go in a shower drain and pull out a bunch of soapy hair, do you? Gross. We’ll deal with that. Running Toilets Running toilets are probably more annoying to deal with than dripping faucets. There’s nothing worse than trying to fall asleep to that sound, or even worse, being woken up by it. The worst part about this issue is that a running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per day. Yikes. This usually happens because of refill tube problems, worn out flapper seals or flush valves, improperly sized flapper chains, or corroded toilet handles. If you’re aware of the cause behind your running toilet, you can check out some YouTube videos on how to repair it or, save the headache and give us a call. Leaking Pipes Leaky pipes are harder to diagnose as there are many reasons as to why they have sprung a leak. Some of these reasons include stubborn clogs causing more issues after not being dealt with quickly enough, incorrect pipe laying, pipe corrosion, pipe joint damage, cracked seals or cracked pipes, and or excessive water pressure. Yeah, that’s a lot to dive into and it’s very hard to diagnose by yourself unless it’s easy to spot. Regardless of what is causing your leaky pipes, the issue should be addressed quickly to prevent any further damage. Assuming it doesn’t get fixed in a timely manner, you’re looking at flooding, deeper problems in your plumbing systems, and eventually – mold. Sump Pump Failures Just hearing “sump pump failures” sounds scary, doesn’t it? There are a few reasons as to why your sump pump failed and those include stuck switches, too much water (due to heavy rain), clogged pipes, improper installation, and your sump pump is too old to continue to work as it should. This is a party of household plumbing that is extremely hard to fix on your own. It’s best to get a professional plumber over to come look at the issue and diagnose/fix to prevent future damage and ensure it is repaired correctly. Water Heater Issues Water heaters are essential to every home. Hot water is a necessity, so if there

5 Myths About Plumbing

5 Myths About Plumbing August 5, 2023 admin Being a plumber for 18 years, you start to hear the craziest myths about plumbing. The worst part about these myths is the fact that they’re all dangerous to your plumbing system’s health. Just in case you’re one of many people that think these plumbing myths are true, we wanted to list 5 of the biggest ones out for you so you know not to continue to do them. So, without further ado, here are 5 of the biggest myths about plumbing! Myth #1: If It Goes Down the Drain, It’s Ok Not everything is made for the drain. Many people believe that if it easily goes down the drain, it’s allowed to be flushed. This is simply not true. Some of the worst things you can put down your sink or toilet drain is grease, coffee grounds, cake batter (or flour-based substances), and “flushable” wipes. If you cook with cooking fats, oils, and grease – do not pour it down the drain. They will clog sewer pipes, which can then cause costly sewer overflows and basement backups. And, if you think watering the grease down first is the key – still wrong. So, what should you do with the leftover oil and grease? Save glass jars and pour the grease and oil into them (after it has cooled). You can discard it with your recycling, avoiding plumbing issues. If you’re an avid coffee drinker, we get it. However, what we don’t get is putting the coffee grounds down the drain. Coffee grounds were once hard beans and they maintain that firm quality, even after they are grounded down. Overtime, the grounds clump together, creating a build-up in your drain pipes. Kind of like coffee-flavored cement. What should you do? Throw them out in the garbage. Calling all bakers! Never pour cake batter or flour-substances down the drain! Many home bakers will try to dilute the batter with water and pour it in the sink. This is still not a good idea when it comes to your plumbing. Why? Flour coagulates when it’s mixed with water, so it can eventually coat your pipes, creating clogs and many issues. In the garbage it goes. If you like to use “flushable” wipes, we get this too. Trust us, sometimes you really just need a good cleaning but you don’t own a bidet. So, you went to the store, saw the word “flushable” on the package and thought you scored. We’re sorry to say that they are not safe for your plumbing system. Flushable wipes, paper towels, and products alike will clog sewers and cause backups, overflowing at wastewater treatment facilities and eventually creating an additional public health risk. Myth #2: Leaky Faucets Are Fine If you have a leaky faucet, it shouldn’t be ignored. Even if you believe a slow dripping faucet is ok, it can still hike up your water bill and be a sign of a bigger problem. It’s best to just get the faucet fixed before you’re spending much more money on your water bill than you expected. Plus, it’s always a good idea to get a plumber to check it out – just in case there’s a bigger problem. Myth #3: Lemon Cleans Garbage Disposals Many homeowners believe that lemon can clean your garbage disposal. We’re here to tell you that the only thing a lemon will do is make it smell nice. It doesn’t actually clean anything. Not only will it not clean it out, but tossing lemon down the drain can also cause clogging. If you need to clean out your garbage disposal, just use a simple brush and some soapy water. Your drain will thank us later. Myth #4: Not All Plumbers Are the Same You know how they say, “even the person that finished last in their class still gets a Dr. in front of their name?” It’s the same thing for plumbers. Not all plumbers are experienced, licensed, and know everything they need to know about the industry. It’s important that you hire a professional plumber with the proper experience and knowledge when it comes to your home’s plumbing. The plumbers at Pilot Plumbing & Drain are all experienced, skilled, and know how to get the job done well and efficiently. Be sure to look into the company or person you plan to hire before doing so. Myth #5: Pipes Only Freeze if the Heat is Off Although this myth is more for the winter weather, it’s important to know this ahead of time. Many people believe that if the heat is off, the pipes will freeze, and that’s the only time they’ll freeze. That’s not true. Pipes run through exterior walls without a lot of insulation or in areas like basements and attics. Even if your furnace is still running, because these pipes are not in a well-insulated area, they can still freeze depending on the temperature outside and around the pipes. Freezing will often lead to a burst pipe, which causes serious water damage and if not cleaned up in a timely manner, mold. If you know where your pipes are located, leave cabinet doors under sinks open, leave the basement and attic door open, and this should help the heat reach the pipes that are in danger of freezing. 5 Plumbing Repairs Every Homeowner Should Know

5 Plumbing Repairs Every Homeowner Should Know

5 Plumbing Repairs Every Homeowner Should Know July 18, 2023 admin When it comes to being a homeowner, there are many responsibilities we all have under our belts. Between keeping up with the landscaping, cleaning, getting annual roof checks, and most importantly, plumbing. Now, we don’t expect all homeowners to know how to do everything a plumber can do, after all – that’s what we’re here for – we believe that there are 5 plumbing repairs that should be known to prevent an issue from getting worse. Number One: Know Where the Shut Off Valve Is Every appliance that uses water in your home is hooked up to a water valve. They may have their own valves in the case of trying to prevent a flood from just one of the appliances, or, there is a valve that shuts off all water supply to your entire home. If you’re noticing that your washer, toilet, dishwasher, or any appliance is starting to leak, creating a puddle nearby, knowing where the shut off valve is and how to turn it off is important. After you’ve done that, your next step is to give us a call so we can help fix the issue. Number Two: Replacing a Sink Aerator (or Faucet) You’ve probably run into a bathroom or kitchen sink faucet breaking or getting old and gross-looking. Replacing these is actually quite simple. A simple YouTube video will show you how it’s done, or speaking to someone at your local Home Depot, Lowes, or similar store. Number Three: Unclogging Toilets, Sinks, and Shower Drains If you’ve never dealt with a clogged toilet, you’re probably lying to us. Toilet clogs, sink clogs, and shower drain clogs are all so normal when you live in a home – especially if you have a family. Always keep a plunger handy for the simple unclogging when it comes to the toilet. As for a sink, you can always try the old wire coat hanger trick if you don’t have access to a snake. If you believe the clog is beyond simple repair, call a professional to prevent any further damage. Also, most people like to pour Drain-O down the drain. This stuff works more like a band-aid – temporary. Plus, it can destroy the plumbing system and pipes. If you’re wearing rubber gloves, looking defeated, and the plunger is failing you – it’s time to give us a call. If you’re into DIY fixes, try baking soda and boiling water. This can help clean drains naturally. Number Four: Repair the Running Toilet A running toilet is not only annoying to listen to, but it’s wasting a lot of water – which wastes a lot of money. The repair for this is usually a simple internal toilet tank replacement part. Turn the water off on the toilet and replace the part. It’s that simple. Again, check out some YouTube videos! Number Five: Repairing a Jammed Garbage Disposal Garbage disposals will jam from time to time, especially if there are things that are going down in there that are not supposed to. The first thing you’ll want to do is check out the model. If you have the most popular type, you can un-jam it with a tool that can twist the blades back and forth until it releases whatever is caught. If that doesn’t work or you have issues with that, give a professional a call for some help. Do NOT stick your hand in there! If You Need a Plumber… Give Pilot Plumbing and Drain a call. Everything You Need to Know About Home Repiping

Everything You Need to Know About Home Repiping

Hiring Pros for Tankless Water Heater Repairs vs. DIY July 15, 2023 admin Repiping a home is exactly what it sounds like – it’s the process of replacing the pipes in a home or building. It is a complete replacement for your water supply plumbing system and usually includes removing the old pipes and installing a new system. The experts at Pilot Plumbing & Drain is here to let you in on what you need to know about home repiping, when it should be done, if it’s worth it, and more. When Should a House be Repiped? There are about 5 general signs that you should look out for that will signify whether you need your home repiped or not. The first sign is discolored water. If the water coming out of your faucet has a yellow, red, or brown tint to it – this is a big red flag. This normally means that there is rust build-up in the pipes. However, if you’re only noticing the discoloration when the water is hot, that usually is the sign that you need your water heater replaced or repaired. The second sign is the most obvious – aged pipe system. If you’re not aware of the age of your home, now is the time to find that out. If your pipes are going on 50 years old or more – it’s probably time to get them replaced. It’s also important to get a professional to your home to help you distinguish what type of piping your home has. The third sign is leaking pipes. Depending on the leak, it could just mean you need a simple repair – however, if you’re starting to notice more leaking than usual, repiping may be in your near future. The fourth sign is corroded pipes. You’ll know if your pipes are corroded if you start to see stains, flaking, discoloration, and you’ll start to notice low water pressure. The fifth sign is noise. Many times a homeowner will hear bumps and clanks, thinking it’s just your home settling or a friendly ghost is stopping by to say hello. Now, we can’t disprove the ghost theory, but if your pipes are making noises in your walls, this is a signal to plumbing problems. However, there are reasons behind each noise, so if you’re hearing something frequently, reach out to a professional and explain it so you can get a clear answer. Just don’t let it go ignored. Three Most Common Pipe Types Every company is different just like every home is different. There are three common pipes that plumbing companies use. These include, Copper: Although there is nothing wrong with getting copper pipes installed in your home, the cost is a bit more when installing it and it’s harder to work with – as it lacks flexibility. However, it still lives a long life. CPVC: This is a good alternative and is cost-efficient. Also easy to work with, many companies install this as it is a win/win for the company and the customers – allowing for a cheaper and faster installation. However, CPVC is more prone to bursting than other types. Pex Pipes/Uponor: This type is flexible, durable, and used in water line replacements and installations. It has the same benefits as CPVC and is also reliable and cheaper. Is Repiping Your Home Worth It? If you think your home needs repiping, you’re probably thinking about your wallet and asking yourself is it worth it? Well, hopefully this will help you make up your mind. The one thing repiping your home’s plumbing can do is increase the value of your home. If you’re planning on selling anytime soon, the fact that your home is completely repiped is a great selling point. This puts your buyers at ease, knowing that they won’t have to deal with having to do this themselves. New pipes also have new plumbing fixtures which means increased water pressure. So, if you’ve been dealing with those annoying low-pressure showers, repiping will help that. It’ll make your showers more enjoyable, help with watering the lawn efficiently, making it easier to wash your car, run water for a bath, fill up a pool, and much more. New pipes also mean cleaner and healthier water. As your older pipes start to corrode and rust, it puts minerals into the water supply, making the water not healthy to consume, shower in, or do chores with. However, even after repiping your house, you should still consider a water filtration system – especially if you live in the Vancouver, WA area. What Goes Into the Repiping Process? Plumber installing primer and glue PVC pipe at construction new home When it comes to the repiping process, generally most companies include full repiping of all water lines in the home, new hose connections, new valves under sinks and toilets, new supply lines, and an improved main shut off to your home and water heater. What Isn’t Usually Included in the Repiping Process? Although most of the important things will be replaced during a home repiping, some areas are not included like the water main from the city meter to the house, drain lines, leaking faucets, toilet leaks, main sewer lines from the home to the street, and water heater replacement. However, if you find a plumbing company that can not only repipe your home but also take care of the other issues, you’ll be able to get all of your repairs on the schedule with one company. For example, Pilot Plumbing & Drain can take care of all of your emergency plumbing services, fix and replace plumbing fixtures, repair and replace water heaters, repair your sewer line, and even install a water filtration system. Factors That Go Into the Cost of a Repipe Every home is different. It’s unfair to give you a general price on how much repiping a home costs, as it depends on these factors. Permits Location Time constraints Number of bathrooms Type of pipe being installed Number of plumbing fixtures If the amount of money is holding you back

How to Find a Water Leak

How to Find a Water Leak

How to Find a Water Leak July 6, 2023 admin Leaks can be the silent killer in many homes, and when they are left unchecked, even minor water leaks can lead to mold, rotting wood, or foundation damage. So, basically a nightmare. Although you may not know there is a leak, there are signs that can lead you to believe you have one. If you believe you do have a water leak, it’s important to give us a call. With our experienced plumbers on your side, you can feel confident in knowing we’ll take care of any leaks on your property. But, before you do that – let’s jump into how to find a water leak. Check Your Water Meter One of the simplest ways to figure out whether or not you have a water leak or not is by shutting off the faucets in your home and checking the water meter. If the water meter is still running, chances are, you have a leak. Most homes have a pressure-reducing valve and pressure gauge located in either the basement, crawl space, or wherever the water supply enters the home. To use this, make sure all taps in and outside of your home are turned off, secure the pressure gauge to your outside tap, turn the tap on full, and review the readings. If the pressure is lower than normal, you probably have a leak. Leak Listening While it cannot pinpoint the location of a leak, electric devices can effectively hear the presence of leaks in water lines. We don’t expect you to have one of these devices and that’s where we come in. We have all the equipment to perform leak detection in your home! However, if there is a decent size leak and you can’t find any puddles or water buildup, chances are the leak is within the walls. You should be able to hear rushing water. If not, you’ll need a device. Check Your Appliances If you’re starting to see water spots coming through the ceiling or floors, check your appliances. Disconnect them from their power source and check around them to ensure the leak isn’t coming from them. There are a couple ways to check whether your toilet has a leak or not. The first one is pretty simple – check around the toilet for any water spots. If you see any, you have a leak. The second one is a bit of a trick – throw some food coloring in the tank. Wait about 12 hours or so and if there is color in the bowl without flushing, that’s a good sign that you have a leak. Pay Attention to Your Bills If your water bill is a lot higher than you’re used to, you probably have a leak. This is a good sign that’ll let you know if you have a leak or not. How Pilot Can Help with Leak Detection Knowing that your plumbing has sprung a leak is excellent, but to repair the problem area, you must first find it. 5 Signs You Need a Water Filtration System in Your Home

5 Signs You Need a Water Filtration System in Your Home

5 Signs You Need a Water Filtration System in Your Home May 15, 2023 admin When you think of the water in your home, you’ll think about your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and every area that needs water to operate. Without water, you can’t shower, use the bathroom, clean your dishes, wash your laundry, and so much more. All of these aspects of living in a home are crucial, so your water should be clean. Water filtration systems will help you feel safe and confident about your drinking water, water you use for your chores, and your plumbing system in general. We believe everyone should have a water filtration system installed, but if you’re on the fence, here are 5 signs you need a one in your home.   Discolored Water   Clean, pure water should have no color to it. If you start to notice that your water is slightly discolored, chances are, something happened to your water line or the water coming into your home from your water company isn’t as clean as it should be. Discolored water is normally caused by sediment and mineral deposits in the pipes that can be stirred up when the water is turned off and then back on. Bad Taste & Smell   Your water should not have a bad taste. Water should taste refreshing and should not give you even a hint of flavor. If your water tastes bad, this is due to bacteria, sulfates, or hydrogen sulfide. Though it may taste bad, this type of contamination is technically safe for you to drink – but if you can’t pinpoint exactly why type of bacteria is in your water, it can be extremely dangerous. If you start to notice your water smelling like rotten eggs or sulfur, it likely contains hydrogen sulfide, which is released when a certain kind of bacteria is present in the water or somewhere in your water system. Odor free water is the way to be. Your Skin and Hair is Constantly Dry   Are you noticing your hair and skin becoming dry consistently? This is primarily due to minerals in your water that can leave a film in your hair and skin, making it difficult to clean and moisturize properly. Testing out different shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and lotions won’t help if the dryness is due to your water. Mysterious Sicknesses   If you start to notice you and your family having health issues or are getting frequently sick, this could be because of your water. Some water contaminants can make you sick and long-term exposure can have detrimental effects. A lot of these contaminants don’t have a distinct color or smell, so it’s hard to know if they exist or not. Contaminants   As we mentioned before, contaminants, harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and pesticides do find their way into your water system. The most common contaminants include Nitrates, Arsenic, Microbial Contaminants (Microorganisms, Bacteria, Viruses, etc.), Aluminum, and Fluoride. A water filtration system can help significantly reduce how many contaminants get into your drinking supply. How to Find a Water Leak Inside a Wall

How to Find a Water Leak Inside a Wall

How to Find a Water Leak Inside a Wall May 5, 2023 admin Leaks are often a silent killer in many homes, but when left unchecked, even minor leaks can lead to mold, rotting wood, or foundation damage. If you do believe you have a leak and you’re not sure what to do about it, calling an experienced plumber is the first thing you should do. Getting on top of a leak before it gets worse and creates more damage is crucial. However, some leaks are hard to detect, especially if you suspect they are coming from inside the wall. So, how do you find a water leak inside a wall? Pilot Plumbing & Drain is here to explain to you how you can locate the leak and what we do to resolve the issue.   How We Pinpoint Leaks   Knowing that your plumbing system has spring a leak is excellent, but to repair the problem area, you must find it. This is where our leak location services come in handy. Leaks are a relatively simple defect that plumbers resolve quickly with the right know-how, but only if they can locate the leak. This is how we do that: Inflatable Cut-Off Points We will work to narrow down the location of the leak by using several inflatable balls to cut off water flow to several distinct sections of the lines. The Pressure is On This process is in areas that fail to maintain water pressure until our plumber can identify the portion containing the leak. Next Steps Your plumber can either attempt to repair the designated area or continue to pinpoint the exact location of the drip. Confirming the Leak Location   To identify the presence of a leak in your plumbing system, our qualified plumbers use a combination of these three techniques: Leak Listening While it cannot pinpoint the location of a leak, electric devices can effectively hear the presence of leaks in water lines. Leaky Pipes: Leaky pipes can cause more issues than one. If the leak is bad enough, it can cause water damage, mold, and even flooding. But, how did the pipes get to this point? There could be a number of reasons as to why your pipes are leaking. It may be because of clogged drains, incorrect pipe installation, corrosion, joint damage, cracked seals, cracked pipes, or excessive water pressure. Whatever the reasoning, it’s best to call a plumber. Video Inspections Using infrared cameras, plumbers can locate any changes in the walls of your plumbing lines. Signs of Water Leaks in Walls   If you suspect there may be hidden leaks in the walls, there are many signs to look for to confirm your suspicion. These signs include damp or discolored drywall; peeling paint or wallpaper; warped or stained wall; a buckle, crack, or water stain on drywall ceiling or your floor; pools of water on the floor near walls or drips from the ceiling; a wall leaking water; and or a musty smell. Slab Leak Detection   Slab leaks are not a quick fix. Leaks that occur near your slab foundation can be some of the most devastating. Not only are they practically impossible to detect until they have become a serious problem, but they also deal significant damage to your home’s foundation. That makes it all the more critical to have us perform a slab leak detection at the first sign of a leak. The main signs to look out for are water spots on the floor, crack in the foundation, and or mold/mildew in unexpected places. How to Find Water Leaks in Walls On Your Own   If you’re ambitious and want to track down a wall leak inside a wall yourself, there a few ways to do this – but just know – without the proper training and knowledge of an experienced plumber, you may not know how bad it is and what to do next after finding the leak. The first thing you can do is check your water meter; turn off faucets, showers, toilets, appliances, etc., that rely on water; avoid using water in your home for at least three hours; and re-read the meter after you’ve done this steps. If the number increased, you have a water leak somewhere in your home. You can also purchase a moisture meter, which will help you locate the leaks inside the walls. However, you must learn how to use this and read it properly so you know what you’re looking for. An infrared camera will also help. Although it won’t detect the leak, it will show you heat temperatures – helping to narrow down where the leak might be. Finally, you can cut into your drywall – but we advise against this, especially if you end up cutting where the leak doesn’t reside. This just creates more work for you. The best thing you can do is hire an experienced plumber that knows how to detect water leaks, repair them, and give you the right advice moving forward. Drainage vs Plumbing: Do You Know the Difference?

Drainage vs Plumbing: Do You Know the Difference?

Drainage vs Plumbing: Do You Know the Difference? April 17, 2023 admin For many homeowners, knowing the difference between drainage and plumbing may not be in their book of knowledge. The good thing is – you don’t have to be plumbing experts because we are! However, it is good to know the difference as well as learn about common plumbing problems.   What’s the Easiest Way to Remember?   Plumbing = fresh water coming into your home and water running through your pipes. Drain = water going out of your home, like when you flush the toilet or use the sink. Now that we sorted that out, let’s get into the common plumbing problems for both plumbing and drain. Common Plumbing Problems   Developing problems with your plumbing system is inevitable, especially if you live in an area that may impact your home’s pipes more than most. Most plumbing problems appear due to normal wear and tear and old age and others depend on how well maintained your plumbing system is. Some of the most common plumbing problems include: Dripping Faucets: Dripping faucets are irritating (the drip noise never stops), wasteful, and can cost you a good amount of money depending on how much it is dripping. If tightening the nozzle doesn’t work, it’s a good idea to call a plumber so it can be accurately diagnosed and fixed. Running Toilets: If you thought the dripping faucet is annoying, how about a running toilet? The constant sound can drive you and your bank account crazy. Some causes of running toilets include refill problems, broken or old flapper seals/flush valves, wrong sized chains, or corroded toilet handles. Low Water Pressure: Low pressure can not only affect your relaxing shower time but the rest of your plumbing system as well. This is also a sign of much bigger problems. Water pressure problems are often caused by pipe corrosion, hidden leaks, drain or sewer clogs, or blocked sewer lines. If you experience lower pressure than normal, contact an emergency plumber ASAP. Slow or Clogged Drains: We’re sure you’ve been victimized by a clog or two in your day. Normally, it’s caused by hair, soap, or other objects that build up in the drain overtime. It’s important to maintain your drains and pipes with routine maintenance to drain clogs. If more than one area in your home is clogged, you may be dealing with sewer line problems. If this is the case, it’s time to call in a professional. Sump Pump Issues: If you’re experiencing sump pump failures, it could have to do with the unit or something external. Signs of this include more water than usual after heavy rain, clogged discharge pipes, bad installation, or age. Water Heater Problems: One of the most important necessities in your home is hot water. If your hot water heater isn’t providing enough or any hot water, there’s something wrong. Issues like this are normally caused by corrosion, loose/broken connections, improper installation, or the wrong size was installed in your home. Common Drainage Problems   Your home’s drainage system is designed to dispose of wastewater as quickly and efficiently as possible. It uses all of the pipes, drains, gutters, etc. that convey rainwater, sewage, bathroom waste, and more. Some of the most common drainage problems include: Blockages: If your drains draining slowly or not at all, and your toilets are not flushing properly, this could be a sign of a blockage. Things like coffee grounds, hair, tissues, cooking fat and oil, and other residues cause a clogged drain, ultimately causing more issues down the road if not fixed right away. Before dumping harsh chemicals down the drain to try to fix it, it’s a better idea to call a licensed plumber so they can diagnose the problems and provide a solution without causing more damage. Damaged Pipes: Over time, it’s normal for pipes to break or crack. If this happens, it will cause drainage issues – as the contents from your home will not be able to make it through the plumbing system. This problem is harder to diagnose on your own – so it’s best to give us a call. Tree Roots: Mother nature is something we can never predict. If you have trees on or around your properties, there’s a chance that the tree roots could grow and interrupt your plumbing system. Roots can puncture holes in the pipework and cause issues that go unseen. What If I Have a Plumbing Emergency?   If you believe you have a plumbing emergency, contact Pilot Plumbing & Drain ASAP. Common Contaminants Found in Water   It’s great that you want to filter your home’s water to better your health, but it’s important to know what contaminants you can find in your home water supply before doing so. This way, you’re educated in what to look for, helping you decipher if you’re ready for a water filtration system installation. Some of the most common contaminants include: Nitrates Arsenic Microbial Contaminants (Microorganisms, Bacteria, Viruses, etc.) Aluminum Fluoride A water filtration system can help significantly reduce how many contaminants get into your drink supply. Also, since that same water supplies your appliances with that they need to operate, do you really want those contaminants while washing your clothes or body? Of course not! We want to ensure that you feel safe about the water you are using to clean, drink, and shower in. Water Filter Pitchers vs. Water Filtration Systems   If you’re just interested in water filters for drinking purposes and are thinking about just purchasing a water filter pitcher, here’s some pros and cons to that. Pros: Water filter pitchers are easy to use, cheap, and do not require installation. Cons: Some water filter pitchers will help with some contaminants, but not all. If you want thorough filtration, you’ll want to contact us about installing a system. While these pitchers do an OK job with your drinking water, filtration systems will eliminate more contaminants, make your water taste much better, and if you choose to install one for your entire home, it’ll protect your clothing and yourself during your showers as well. It’s also difficult to find a water pitcher that will really work. There are mixed reviews on every brand as well as videos on TikTok and other social media platforms showing the inconsistencies of these water filters. How Does it Help Save Money?   Do you buy bottled water for your family? Whether you buy packs of individual bottled water or buy the 5-gallon water cooler bottles, the cost adds up – especially if you have a family. With a filtration system, you can just fill your glass right from the tap water without having to worry about consuming organic contaminants, affecting your health. Plus, not buying bottled water helps preserve our environment. Plastic waste is a large problem in our country and being able to eliminate your part in that helps more than you think! It also helps you save money on soap. How? An advanced system works similar to a water softener and can remove the materials in the water that prevent the soap’s action. This will help the soap provide more lather, and you won’t need to use as much when you shower or wash your hands. Reduces Potential Plumbing Issues   Minerals, heavy metals, chemicals, and pesticides can take a toll on your pipes as they cause corrosion and other issues. A water filtration system will eliminate these potentially damaging factors at the source so you can extend the life of your pipes, hot water heaters, dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator with an ice maker, water dispenser, and garbage disposal. Filtration systems can prevent issues with your plumbing system and appliances because they filter any impurities from the water.
